1: Living Environment

2: Language
Indonesian domestic helpers speak very limited English however before their arrival, they are taught conversational Cantonese. Filipino domestic helpers on the other hand are fluent in English.
3: Religion
Indonesian domestic helpers are majority Muslims and thus will practice daily praying and fasting. Filipino domestic helpers are mostly Catholic and therefore adhere to a comparatively lenient religious lifestyle.
4: Diet
Most Indonesian domestic helpers are Muslims and therefore do not eat pork.
5: Education
The Philippine government provides free primary and secondary education, and thus most Filipino domestic helpers who come to work in Hong Kong have a secondary school education or above. Most Indonesian domestic helpers have an education level of elementary school or above, however communication and housework should not be a problem.
6: Hygiene
The hygiene standard of foreign domestic helpers are different from ours. For example, foreign domestic helpers may have an insufficient water supply in their hometown, which may lead to bathing only every other day. Therefore, employers must clearly explain their cleaning standards and requirements to the foreign domestic helper and demonstrate the correct procedures such as cleaning the floor and washing dishes.
7: Working Hours
Employers are lawfully required to assign a day off every week for the foreign domestic helper.
8: Holidays
It is recommended to assign Sunday off for Filipino domestic helpers while letting Indonesian domestic helpers rest during fasting as work may strain her body.
9: Age
It is recommended to hire a younger and energetic domestic helper when taking care of elderly and an experienced and loving domestic helper when taking care of children.
10: Use of household items (food, toilet, telephone, TV, etc…)
To avoid misunderstandings, please explain clearly and set boundaries with the foreign domestic helper what time they are allowed to watch the TV, permission to use the phone, what food are shared and what not, etc…
